The main topic in this months report is the re-zoning of the Jervis Bay Marine Park (JBMPA). For those of you who like to fish Stony Creek to the south of the Bay you will need to get off your behind and get your submission in by the 17th of September 2010, or potentially Stony will be re-zoned sanctuary zone and no fishing. The park is required to undergo a review of the zoning plan after 5 years (now), and the new plan will be put in place for a ten year period so it’s important that all fishers have the point of view heard. Options other than Stony Ck are available such as north of Crocodile Head, in fact the current Croc Hd sanctuary zone could be re-opened. For more information contact the JBMPA on 4428 3000, or preferably go online to complete your submission at www.mpa.nsw.gov.au
Do it now!

For the game fishos, hopefully as your reading this we’ll have seen some big “blue barrels” aka Southern Bluefin Tuna, making a winter run along the east coast. Fish to 150kg plus have already been caught in Victoria so here’s hoping. Also hoping this month the banks will produce another epic run of big winter Kings over 20kg like last year. The Bay is a patchy affair at the moment with reds for those in the know in shallow. Trolling Longnose and Bowen with small silver slugs will produce salmon and tailor, in fact late June saw patches of Salmon the size of football fields just inside Pt Perp. Size your gear down to 6lb for a bit of sportfishing fun. If you can beat the leather jackets then anchor and burley where rock meets sand for bream and reds.

In the Basin the water temp has now started to stabilise at around 11-13 degrees. This means the fish will come back on the chew with lures set to out fish bait until early October. Nows the time to tie on a blade with at least six species being on offer on a regular basis. Personally I can’t drag myself away from catching bream on hard bodied lures in less than a metre of water, and it goes all day so no need to get up early! By catch recently on a hard body included a 65cm tailor, zzzzzzzzzzzz. If you haven’t experienced this form of fishing yet then give me a call, most tours see someone achieve a personal best.
On the media front, Stay tuned on Saturday afternoon’s for a segment on St George’s Basin with those two characters from “Hook Line and Sinker”. We all know fishing TV shows are a dime a dozen, but Hook, Line and Sinker is different. Featuring two guys who don’t pretend to know everything about fishing but capture all the fun and shenanigans as they tour around the country, fishing all the hotspots - not always catching, but always coming back with something entertaining!
Nick Duigan and Andrew Hart have been filming the show for five years in Tasmania, and some of their classics have included catching a fish behind the back of a remote control boat, towing Andrew on a ski rope to become the world’s first live lure and growing mullets in order to capture the wily species!

Also make sure you get a copy of the July edition of “Fishing World Magazine”. We’re proud to say it’s our first full feature and we’re absolutely stoked!

See you on the water some time.

Tight lines and good times.

Speaking of big fish. It was great to see JC, JP and Jason releasing a 97cm croc they caught on a 1/0 hook with a piece of prawn whilst bait fishing for reds last week. After doing a tour with me prior to easter they put their new found skills into action with a great result. Right place, right time. If you want to improve your local knowledge and you ability as an angler then give me a call today.

See you on the water some time.

Fish tank for hire! Pictures will be on site soon.

Bay and Basin Sportsfishing has just acquired a 3000L display fish tank on a dual axle trailer. So if you’re a tournament or event organiser then call us today.

I recently spent a few days on the Basin with Michael “Guesty” Guest filming for his “Fishing the Edge” series which should be available on youtube soon. Check “Fishing the Edge” on you tube in the coming weeks for some bream on hard body lure action.

Calm weather and good fishing has been the on the cards for the past few weeks, in fact on some days we’ve been asking for wind to fire up the surface action in the estuaries. The bream on surface lure action had slowed a little after the big rains in February but the last few weeks has seen a steady stream of good quality fish caught and released to fight another day. Having said that, the Basin has been a bit patchy. The water temp cooled a degree or two overall in mid Feb and the flats are now around 23-24deg (as opposed to 24-26) so the fish were a little slow to respond to lures for a week or two. Bait and berley has definitely been the go during that period for good quality bream and snapper. Snapper to 2kg are now a viable proposition at this time of year. We have managed a few 40cm models, and one cracker 55cm fish caught and released by Jonathon Castle but there are plagues of 29-32cm fish right throughout the system. This situation, along with the winter run of big Tailor should fire over the next few months as a result of the good Feb rain. Can’t wait! In the mean time the surface action should last well into May, so if you’ve never caught a bream or whiting on the surface now is still the time. Over the past few months we have successfully introduced many satisfied clients to the joy of this style of fishing and most tours see people achieve a personal best. On the flathead front I would have to say that this summer has been ordinary to say the least. The 36-60cm table fish have been a struggle all summer and we have only had a 3 dedicated session where we have targeted one of the Basin’s “big girls” since winning the Flattie Classic in January. Adam from Fergo’s Tackle World in Fairy Meadow lost a nice one around 75cm at the boat a few weeks ago. Having said that we achieved a nice bag of lizards from 37-62 cm on the weekend, with a 60cm personal best on the first cast of the day for Jacob Kirmaier from Sydney on Sunday.

In between Basin trips the family and I spent a nice week at Bhundoo Cottages on the upper Clyde River. The wilderness river country and the Bass fishing was amazing. Check out my post on “The Fishing Hub” website. http://www.thefishinhub.com.au/hub_forum.php or www.bhundoobushcottages.com.au

The big fresh has also fired up the jewfish in the lower reaches of the Clyde and Shoalhaven Rivers and we should see some good fish taken as the water cools and kicks of the mullet spawning run. We will be focusing our attention on “The Ghost of the Estuary” over the coming winter and spring so stay tuned.

Jervis Bay is also fishing pretty well at the moment, and will continue to do so until it receives a dose of cold waterover night. This year has seen a welcome return of the line tearing bonito. These under rated little speedsters have been noticeably absent the past few years, and on light tackle will keep you entertained as they hit surface presentations. Some tours have achieved seven species on lures including small Sampson Fish. The most common species at the moment a reds to 2kg, Rat Kings, big salmon to 70cm, tailor, and bream. The odd big King is also in the mix as well, in fact a few Marlin have come from the rocks and middle ground over the past month, so a 24kg set up is necessary at times.

As the weather cools and we approach winter the fishing should fire in the Basin if the past few seasons are anything to go by so stay tuned.

See you on the water some time.

“Tight lines and good times”

Ernie released this 94cm beauty. The fish was actually caught by Kev on a green gladiator blade.
November 2009 in the Basin will go down as a month of quality not quantity as the smaller lizards have gone off the chew for the time being but the Bream have been very active over this period and some good sized fish have been caught.
