BAY AND BASIN SPORTSFISHING WINS THE 2010 BASIN FLATHEAD CLASSIC!
Slide show here.
Team
Bay and Basin Sportsfishing consisting of Ian “The Big E”
Phillips and Greg Reid recently took out the St George’s Basin
Lure and Fly Club’s annual Flathead Classic on the 24.1.2010.
The Big E’s 90cm 5.95kg fish was the only fish in the 90’s
on what was a relatively tough day’s fishing. The relationship
the Ian "Big E" Phillips has with the giant dusky flathead
is something that defies description. There's not many individuals
who lay claim to catching and releasing over 20 metery's, and in
the past twelve months we've done about 20 odd trips together on
the Basin and only once failed to put at least an 80cm on the boat. There's
two words you love to hear when fishing with "Big E"and
that is "good fish"! It's now almost become a mechanical
process of winding in my line, grabbing the BIG net, making adjustments
on the electric and trying my best to stay calm given the intense
hit of adrenalin my body is experiencing. The big girl on the day
was pinned perfectly through the top lip but she did come to the
net on the second attempt.
Seeing that specimen in the net after the planning that went into
that event was very satisfying.
The day itself didn't produce as many big one's as I thought it
might. Our warm up session on the Friday before saw the big fella
bag out on an 88, 82, a trio of 65's, a few 50's and standard run
of the mill 30's and 40's, so it was good to see the luck hold out
for the day. My gut feeling for the day was that is was going to
happen around 1030am, and just after 10am when we pulled up about
300m behind Jim Barrie who had been drifting over a favourite section
of ground that we hadn't touched since about late October, the Big
E came up tight about 20mins later and the rest is history.
If
your part of a club and would like to have the Big E come and deliver
one of his informative presentations on catching and releasing a
MONSTER flathead then contact us today.
And
remember, put the big girls back!
A
90cm dusky flathead is a big breeding female of around 15 years
of age. She will produce between 2-3million eggs per year and is
far too valuable to kill if we all want to continue catching a Basin
“Croc” well into the future.
As
I write this the rain is steadily falling overhead which will do
wonders for most systems. I have a Bass trip planned for the last
week in Feb to the upper reaches of the Clyde River so stay tuned
for that report. Also keep in mind that late march into April should
see good numbers of 1-2kg snapper in some quiet calm estuary water
so let’s keep our fingers crossed for that one.
Till
next time.

Lines and good times!”
