Spring
is in the air here on the beautiful south coast of NSW
and now is the time most tuned in fisherman will notice the wattle
blossom on the trees so we should see the fish become more active
any day now.I'm really excited about the fact that fish will start
to look up to the surface for prey. Give me a surface bite any
day. The last two weeks have certainly see a big improvement after
a few mild days.Big flathead will also come on the chew soon so
pack your “croc gear” and make sure you return all
large flathead to the water. Our policy is every flathead 60cm
and above goes back because they’re breeding females.July
to September are also about good snapper in close due to the giant
cuttlefish ending it's 18mth reproductive lifecycle. Big reds
will come in close to feed, in fact they will also feed up near
the surface so if you see a fresh cuttly that appears to be bobbing
around throw out a lightly weighted plastic or bait and hang on.
Whilst guiding clients in Jervis Bay recently yours truly managed
to catch and release a 72cm model in 5m of gin clear water within
spitting distance of the shore. The power of these reds in shallow
is unbelievable. After a big weather event exercise caution and
hit the washes and gravel to 30m for some great snapper action.By
far the hardest estuary species to catch on lures would be the
"Jewfish" or "Mulloway". Late September into
November are a great time to have a crack at a Jewfish on plastics
in both the Shoalhaven and Clyde Rivers. I'm also offering late
afternoon and evening sessions targeting Estuary Perch (EP's)
on plastics.
Since
the banning of kingfish traps over a decade ago now we are starting
to see big Kings become a viable winter and Spring force to be
reckoned with as the bigger fish congregate on the deeper reefs
to 100m. Areas around the banks have been producing fish to 20kg
of late with plenty of crew getting smoked on 80lb braid. Having
said that, fish around the metre mark were taken recently by
crew fishing with Angelo from Jervis Bay Fishing Charters with
20lb braid on 3-6kg rods and 5000 sized reels in 100m of water!
amazing effort. To book an offshore trip to the "Banks"

Jervis
Bay Marine Park rezoning (JBMPA). For those of you who
like to fish Stony Creek to the south of the Bay you will need
to get off your behind and get your submission in by the 17th
of September 2010, or potentially Stony will be re-zoned sanctuary
zone and no fishing. The park is required to undergo a review
of the zoning plan after 5 years (now), and the new plan will
be put in place for a ten year period so it’s important
that all fishers have the point of view heard. Options other than
Stony Ck are available such as north of Crocodile Head, in fact
the current Croc Hd sanctuary zone could be re-opened. For more
information contact the JBMPA on 4428 3000, or preferably go online
to complete your submission at www.mpa.nsw.gov.au
Do it now!
That’s
it for now. See you on the water some time.
Tight lines
and good times.
