Research

We are proud to announce that Bay and Basin Sportsfishing has become involved in a St George’s Basin Guardian Program.

Currently the NSW Dept of Industry and Investment is setting up a network of volunteer local rec fishers on the south coast who will take an interest in fish habitat protection issues in specific Recreational Fishing Havens (RFH) that they know and regularly fish. The idea is that groups of local fishers (called RFH Guardians) can keep in regular contact with the dept for advice on fish habitat issues such as DAs and development works adjacent to the RFHs, ideas for habitat rehabilitation works for grant applications, reporting illegal works, and any other fish habitat issues of concern. The RFH Guardians can also use the dept as first point of contact for any fish habitat issues/concerns they have with their local RFH estuary which can be followed up internally in the Dept, or with Council or other agencies. The overall idea is to give local rec fishers a greater voice in ongoing habitat management issues related to the RFH estuaries.

If you have any local concerns then please contact us on 0413 610 832.

HARRY’S TAILOR

You may remember Harry’s 76cm 5.1kg Jervis Bay Tailor from a few month back. The results came back and the fish was aged at 12years old by a dissection of the otoliths (ear bone).

From fisheries research dept:”The tailor was aged at 12 years old. We don't count the rings unless they are fully formed, so in reality, it would be closer in age to 13 than 12 years. The growth rings are a bit all over the place, but for a tailor these are pretty clear. Normally they are really hard to age. If this fish was land locked in a coastal lake it would be subject to much greater temp ranges in summer and winter which would result in clearer growth rings than if the fish was free to roam around the ocean, which has much less temp variability. This is all just speculation though.”

Note the red dots show one years growth. This was interesting when you compare this fish with the “Big E’s” 76cm 6.9kg St George’s Basin Tailor from last August.
